Philosophy and Curriculum

Developmental Psychologist Erik Erikson used the term “vigorous unfolding” to describe the newly freed energies and autonomy of the early childhood years. At Mr. Luo's Academy, we believe children in this stage of development relish new feelings of purposefulness and are invigorated by their accomplishments.

Erikson regarded play as the vital means by which young children learn about themselves and the surrounding world. Imaginative play permits children to try new skills with little risk of criticism, allowing them to "try on new jackets" as they develop their unique personalities and abilities. To support this, approximately a third of each day in our program is dedicated specifically to imaginative play.

Our philosophy is built on three core pillars to ensure a nurturing, "cozy" environment for your child:

  - The Montessori Approach: We provide a prepared environment that sparks interest and allows children to learn through effortless absorption, activity, and investigation.
  - Encouraging Initiative: We transform potential defeats into manageable obstacles. When a child faces a challenge, we celebrate their "moxy" and effort, building a culture where progress is celebrated over fixed ability.
  - Kindergarten Readiness: We focus on the social, emotional, and intellectual skills necessary for a smooth transition to school, including afternoon support for older students.

We are committed to providing a safe space to try, to make mistakes, and to learn, free from externally imposed fear or shame.
